KRA Begins Processing Tax Waiver Applications

by biasharadigest

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) says it has begun processing tax waiver applications, following the June 30th deadline for filing tax returns. This is in line with the Tax Procedures Act of 2015, which allows taxpayers to apply for a wavier for penalty or interest.

A public notice from the agency dated July 30th, 2020, says that it has already “finalized the rollout of the system enhancements for processing of the waiver applications and has embarked on clearing the backlog of the applications.”

KRA is calling applicants to submit supporting evidence for their applications within 30 days to facilitate the processing of the waiver. Applicants who do not offer supporting evidence will pay interest or penalties as the agency will reject their waiver applications.

“In order to expedite processing of the pending applications, KRA shall be contacting each applicant through email or SMS contact information provided on their iTax profile. The applicants will be required to submit supporting evidence for each application within a period of 30 days from the date specified in the aforementioned communication,” the notice reads.
