CS Magoha further stated that upon inspecting various institutions, he observed that some measures still needed to be taken before being cleared to operate.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has said the government is not in a hurry to open colleges, saying only those which have complied with the set regulations and protocols will be opened in September.

Speaking when he inspected Kericho Teachers Training College on Saturday, Magoha emphasized that Murang’a,  Kericho and Asumbi Teachers Training Colleges are the only ones which have met the requisite conditions.

According to the CS, the three colleges have put in place necessary infrastructure recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said Eregi and Mosoriot Teachers Training Colleges are some of those yet to comply.

He added that the government has not cleared any university in the country to reopen and those saying they are ready to reopen are lying. He said Strathmore University is the only institution that is about to get cleared.

“Even then, they still have several measures to meet before we clear them,” he added.

On the plight of private school teachers, Magoha called on parents to look for a way of paying them during this pandemic period.

He also said the Board of Management teachers are also suffering and the government is consulting on what could be done.

Private school owners have called on the National and County governments to list their teachers and staff among the vulnerable group.

They argue that they pay taxes to both County and National governments.
