Captain Daudi Kimuyu Kibati’s death was announced by Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Thursday during his daily briefing updates on the country.

His death was among three to die of Covid-19 this week.

Before the government announced the suspension of all international flights on March 25, Kenya Airways offered a one-way complimentary ticket to Kenyans citizens in New York who were in urgent need to return home.

The 61-year-old retired Major of the Kenya Air Force was tasked to fly the last Dreamliner 787 from John F Kennedy Airport before New York City was put under lockdown on March 23rd due to Coronavirus.

Kenyans have hailed the Late Captain for his heroic efforts to evacuate Kenyans stranded in New York.

Upon touchdown from New York, Captain Kibati was placed under quarantine at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel together with his colleagues and passengers.

While in quarantine, he began to feel unwell which led him to be transferred to Nairobi Hospital on March 29th. He died four days later.

Following his death, the family requested privacy since he led a private life.

“Major (Rtd) Captain Daudi Kibati lived and enjoyed his life quietly and away from the media and publicity. The family requests that we respect his wish as we sincerely mourn his untimely departure,” read a statement from the late Captain’s family.
