2020 Exam Dates: The coronavirus pandemic has seen the normal academic calendar disrupted in Kenya. Children in all learning institutions across the country are currently at home as the government implements measures to keep the scourge at bay.

This has prompted players in the education sector to start making calls for the postponement of the national examinations. The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has now asked for the national examinations to be posptponed.

TSC to hire 5,000 permanent teachers, 10,000 more interns

“The Ministry of Education and the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) must postpone the national examinations immediately, said,” Kuppet Secretary-General Akelo Misori said.

According to Mr. Misori, the anxiety in the the school system will not allow the examinations to be administered on schedule. Currently, Kenya’s examination papers are printed in the UK and the lockdown will disrupt the practicals and make it difficult to cover the syllabus as scheduled.

“It will also be difficult for Knec officials to travel to the UK to revise and have the exam papers for the exams, whose practicals are scheduled to begin in September. Data from Knec indicates that, by the deadline for registration on February 28, a total of 1,938,667 candidates had registered,” a report in a local daily said.

Postponing the exams could very well see students repeating classes. Already, Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) acting Chief Executive Officer Mercy Karogo has already cancelled April certificate and diploma examinations for early childhood development and special needs education.
