, MIGORI, Kenya, Jan 31 – Three towns in Migori County are undergoing facelifts courtesy of the Sh518 million grant from the World Bank infrastructure development.

The project, which is carried out by World Bank’s Kenya Urban Support Programmeis being implemented in the towns of Rongo, Migori and Awendo.

Migori County Governor Okoth Obado says the funds will go towards developing new markets, improving road networks and connecting water and sewerage systems.

“Already, we have positive feedbacks from wanainchi, the projects have given the towns a new facelift, the roads are also coming up with streetlights,” he said.

Obado, who spoke to the press in Kisumu on Thursday during the induction course for the new board members for the three towns, also announced that his government will allocate more funds to uplift the status of other towns in the county.

It was a requirement by the World Bank that the three towns appoint members of the boards as a minimum condition to qualify for the grant.

Obado says that in the next financial year, funds will be allocated in the budget to upgrade the status of Sori, Kehancha, Muhuru Bay and Isebania urban centers.

“We are envisioning setting aside our own funds to actualize some development works in other towns in the county,” he said.

Migori is among the 45 counties that will receive the Sh28 billion facility from the world bank to support their development agenda over the next five years.

The programme aims to strengthen urban institutions and help create systems to deliver improved infrastructure and services in the selected towns and municipalities.
