Public also warned against revealing their passwords to unauthorized people.

, NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 28-The Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has warned the public against using public Wi-Fi for online transactions.

The public has been asked to ensure they conduct their transactions on secure network to minimise fraud cases.

“As you make online payments online this holiday, ensure you are using a secure Internet connection. A secure connection prevents unauthorized access to your personal information such as your password and PIN,” KBA said in a statement.

This will help the society to be on the lookout of cybercriminals who wait for the holiday season to steal from vulnerable Kenyans.

KBA also warned the public against sharing their personal information such as PIN and passwords with anyone, including friends, family or relatives.

“Beware of hackers and fraudsters through enhancing your security across payment platforms, mobile, card and internet banking systems,” the statement adds.

KBA’s warning comes in the wake of the Communication Authority’s report that revealed Cyber threats in Kenya rose to 26.6 million compared to 11.3 million threats in the January-March period in 2019.

In the period under review, the banking sector remained the most targeted sector accounting for 18 percent of the attacks, while payment systems accounted for 10 percent of the attacks.

The National Cybersecurity Centre also said they detected 51.9 million threats for the 2018-2019 period, compared to the 22.1 million recorded in the 2017-2018 period.
