Road users plying the Nairobi-Nakuru highway were last evening left stranded for hours following a major crackdown that targeted un-roadworthy vehicles.

Traffic police and National Transport and Safety Authority officers detained over 40 Public Service Vehicles near Naivasha, leaving irate passengers complaining about their travel plans.

A crackdown by the National Transport and Safety Authority along Nairobi-Nakuru Highway saw a number of Public Service Vehicles detained after they were deemed defective and unfit to transport passengers.

Passengers were left stranded with most complaining of being inconvenienced even as hawkers made the most of the situation.

Rift Valley Traffic enforcement officer Rashid Ali, says most of the vehicles impounded had faulty speed governors while some drivers were plying the route for the first time.

The crackdown will be replicated in other parts of the country ensure the roads are safe amid the hustle and bustle of last-minute travels.

Last week, the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai traffic police officers manning roadblocks to act against excess passengers in public vehicles.
