Safaricom Platinum: Safaricom users on Friday morning were able to successfully subscribe to the telco’s platinum data plan for free. Safaricom has four platinum data plans for its subscribers sold at Sh. 10,000, Sh. 5000, Sh. 3,000 and Sh. 2,000.

To get the offer, customers had to dial *544# and select option 6 for the platinum offer. A customer then had to select any offer of their choice from the lowest to the highest.

To get the offer, rather than paying through airtime or M-Pesa, the customer had to pay using their Bonga points.

From as low as just one Bonga point, a customer could buy the Sh10,000 package which offers 100 international call minutes, 1,500 minutes and 40gb of data.

It was not until 9:10am that Safaricom were informed of the system malfunction and have since taken down the platinum offers. Some subscribers shared screenshots from Safaricom that informed them, “The data plan you had purchased illegally shall be deducted from your Mpesa account.”

Last year, the telco suffered a systems failure on the administration of Bonga Points which saw some people redeem their inflated points for rewards. The system error tripled subscribers’ Bonga points then.
