Youths urged to embrace digital technology to earn a living

, NAIROBI, Kenya, June 20 – In a country where more than 10 million youths are despairingly looking for a job, can something be done?

Focus has now been turned to this unemployed lot, who have been challenged to embrace technology, as it provides a myriad of opportunities. One of such option, is the use of internet to earn a living – that job, could be just a click of a button away.

In Nyandarua County, authorities have launched a digital programme dubbed “Ajira” reaching out to the youths, in a bid to coach them on the positive exploitation of the opportunities that abound online.

The County Government has been running a programme where some 130 youths were trained in “active digital employment and earning a living.”

Nyandarua County Governor Francis Kimemia says the programme, is being undertaken in collaboration with the National Government, hopes to reach about 10,000 youths- who will be impacted with digital know how and skills needed to get them going.

It will be implemented for a span of 5 years, he said.

“My administration is committed to mainstreaming the youth agenda, as they constitute over half of the population in the county,” he said.

The Governor pointed out that the Ajira Programme provided a new opportunity for the youth to exploit digital technology through a variety of tools including the smart phones.”

He has however challenged the National Government to increase the training centers from the current four to 7, so that more learners can be enrolled.

Information Communication and Technology Authority (ICTA) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Catherine Getao urged youths in the country to use the available resources, however little, to advance themselves and utilize the opportunities provided by government agencies like the Ajira Programme.
