An aspect of indiscipline in the National Police Service came to the fore after seven Administration Police officers assaulted a deputy county commissioner in Githunguri, Kiambu county.
The officers went ahead to lock Njiru Deputy County Commissioner James Mwangi Wamute alongside his wife and son Brandon Ngigi in a police cell in Gitiha sub-location.
The AP officers are Sergeant James Mwangi, Corporals Chege Njoroge and Christopher Mawili, Constables John Maseki, Naftali Laibuni, Joseph Chesereng and Martin Munene.
They assaulted and injured the three victims whom the officers accosted on their way home at about 7:30 pm on Saturday, June 15.
They later escorted them to Githunguri police station together with Wamute’s wife Charity Mukue.
The APs started beating county commissioner’s son prompting him to intervene.
The senior government officer was assaulted in front of his wife as he pleaded with the cops beating up his son.
A police brief sent to Vigilance House indicated the administrator had identified himself to the officers by showing his certificate of appointment from the Ministry of Interior.
But the officers went ahead to assault him, injuring his nose and right leg nonetheless.
The officers had accused Brandon of obstructing them by offloading murram on the feeder road heading to their home.
But they booked the three for the offence of affray which is taking part in a fight in public.
Police at the Githunguri station found their AP counterparts’ account of events suspicious.
The officer in charge of the station assessed the claims and released them to seek medical treatment.
The seven AP officers are now facing charges of assault and causing bodily harm and malicious damage to property.
