Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege has down played reports that she broke into tears after being embarrassed by an irate crowd that booed her during Team Embrace rally in the county.
Instead, Chege claimed she was overwhelmed by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s love for the county and could not hold her tears after receiving favours from the Head of State on behalf of Murang’a residents.
Speaking Sunday, June 16, at Kahatia Primary School where she sponsored a free medical camp, the MP said she only pleaded with the youth not to embarrass her since she was accompanied by other women leaders from across the country, and had brought goodies from the government.
I was never heckled, I was only overwhelmed by the love that the President has for the great county. Receiving vaccination machines worth KSh 36 million and cheques for women and youth worth KSh 25 million is not a simple joke.
I was overcome by the love and cried upon realising that there are people who just want to rubbish the development agenda in the county and in the region,” she said.
The Murang’a county MP claimed some malicious people were used by her political nemesis to blow the issue out of proportion by creating a false impression on social media.
Chege had a tough time trying to calm down a rowdy crowd during their Team Embrace rally in the county which saw a section of women leaders accompany her.
The female politicians used the occasion to vouch for the handshake deal between Uhuru and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
However, trouble began when Kigumo MP Ruth Mwaniki took to the podium and stated she only recognised Uhuru as the country’s and Mt. Kenya region’s leader and no one else was worth her recognition.
Some rowdy youths started to chant pro-Ruto slogans, asking the MP to pass their greetings to the deputy president.
Efforts by the county women leader to control the situation failed, compelling her to break into tears, prompting her colleagues to step in and console her.
After she regained composure, the women rep took to the podium again and defended Uhuru who she said deserved the locals’ support to finish his second term.
It is alleged after the function, some leaflets were distributed with words “Embrace ni Rao”, meaning the women’s league belonged to opposition chief Raila.
During the event, Chege and Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru abandoned Ruto and declared their full support to Uhuru and the ODM leader.
